Institute of Forest Science Russian Academy of Science (IFS RAS) is a research institution with an established scientific team, which occupies a leading position in the field of forestry and forest ecology in the European part of Russia.

The main direction of scientific research is the disclosure of mechanisms for the functioning of forest ecosystems as the basis for management of productivity, sustainability and protective functions of forests in the conditions of intensive natural use and climate change. The Institute is engaged in defining a strategy for sustainable forest management, scientific support for the conservation of the gene pool and natural diversity of forest and wetland ecosystems.

The Institute maintains a network of stationary and experimental forestry facilities that characterize representative areas of forest, swamp and agroforestry biogeocenoses of the main forestation zones in the European part of Russia (from the northern taiga to semi-desert) and has the necessary scientific infrastructure for long-term observations and field experiments.

IFS RAS is a co-founder of the journal “Russian Journal of Forest Science”. The journal is included in the list of scientific journals of VAK and is included in the List of peer-reviewed scientific publications, where the main results of dissertations for the degree of the PhD should be published.

In addition to scientific activities, the experienced team of the IFS RAS, which includes an outstanding Russian biologist, academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences Vompersky S.E., conducts systematic training of highly qualified specialists in the field of forestry under the training programs for scientific and pedagogical personnel in postgraduate studies. In addition, under the chairmanship of Stanislav Eduardovich, the Dissertation Council for the defense of doctoral and candidate’s dissertations in biological specialties operates at the Institute.
